Peterson of Dublin: A Legacy of Pipe Making Excellence

South of Dublin, where the metropolis transitions into suburbia and the foothills of the Wicklow Mountains beckon, lies the headquarters of one of the world's oldest pipe factories: Peterson of Dublin. The company is still known today as "Kapp & Peterson" in honor of its founders, the brothers Friedrich and Heinrich Kapp from Nuremberg.

In 1865, these two Germans opened a smokers' articles shop named Kapp Brothers on the elegant Grafton Street in Dublin. Around the same time, Irishman Charles Peterson began crafting briar pipes and in 1890, he invented the famous "system" pipe, featuring a reservoir in the stem beneath the bowl to keep tobacco dry. The aim was to channel all moisture into the reservoir. Peterson presented this revolutionary invention to the German brothers, who were so impressed that they awarded him two gold medals in London. Shortly thereafter, Kapp & Peterson was established, marking the beginning of a renowned pipe-making enterprise.
