Stanwell

Stanwell pipes embody the pinnacle of Danish craftsmanship in the world of smoking pipes. Founded in 1942 by Poul Nielsen, who adopted the English name Stanwell to expand into markets dominated by British briar pipes, the brand unexpectedly gained international prestige for its distinctly Danish style.

Integral to Stanwell's history is Sixten Ivarsson, a brilliant designer who significantly enhanced the global reputation of Danish pipes. His nearly forty-year collaboration with Stanwell and its founder, Poul "Stanwell" Nielsen, remains a cornerstone of the brand's identity. The company still includes some Ivarsson models in its lineup.

Originally established in 1942 in Kyringe, Netherlands, during Denmark's occupation by Nazi Germany, Stanwell initially operated as a wood mill producing clogs before transitioning to square-shaped beechwood pipes. Starting in 1948, under Sixten Ivarsson's influence, Stanwell shifted to producing pipes from briar wood.

Over the years, Stanwell's prestige and production volume grew significantly, with peak years seeing over 250,000 pipes manufactured annually. Since 1965, Stanwell's modern factory has been located in a former dairy in Borup, south of Copenhagen.

Stanwell's reputation was further solidified through collaborations with renowned Danish pipe artists such as Bang (Ulf Noltensmeier/Per Hansen), Jess Chonowitsch, Tom Eltang, Poul Ilsted, Anne Julie, and Poul Winsløw, who continue to design various models for the brand. After Poul "Stanwell" Nielsen's death in 1982, the company was acquired by the Rothman Group, under the leadership of Jens Lillelund, who had previously worked closely with the founder.

A distinctive feature of Stanwell pipes is the meticulous craftsmanship involved: while pipe heads are machine-copied, all other manufacturing stages are performed by hand. Each pipe is marked with an "S" crowned by a crest, inlaid on silver, brass, or white depending on the pipe's quality. Remarkably, about two-thirds of Stanwell's production staff are women, noteworthy given the traditionally male-dominated nature of pipe crafting.

Stanwell's catalog boasts approximately eighty different models, each offered in numerous variations: smooth, sandblasted, with various decorative finishes, in multiple colors, and with or without filters—totaling over 400 unique pipes. Each year sees the addition of an average of six new models, with less popular designs phased out based on market reception.

Although Stanwell historically favored filterless pipes due to their impact on design, filtered pipes have become one of their most significant product groups, especially in the German market. Stanwell now offers 9mm filters to cater to this demand.

In addition to their premium lines, Stanwell produces more economical series like "Danske Club" and "Royal Danish". Leveraging their expertise in sandblasting, many Danish freehand pipe artists entrust Stanwell with their pipes for this specialized treatment.
