When it comes to pipes, there are different shapes, materials, and sizes! The color, shape, and mouthpiece material each have their own characteristics, which is why there are so many different pipes! You need to consider all the components of the pipe to make your choice. Does Length Matter?

The length of the pipe influences the smoke's journey through the bowl and mouthpiece before reaching your mouth. The main difference between a long and a short pipe is the temperature of the smoke. The shorter the pipe, the hotter the smoke will be. In Italy, very short pipes are called "Brucianaso," but we do not recommend them for beginners. The smoke is so hot that it might be uncomfortable, especially for your tongue. It's better to start with a medium-length pipe.

Shape: Bent, Half-Bent or Straight?

In our store, we are often asked which shape is best for beginners. It might seem obvious to seasoned smokers, but there are significant differences between a bent pipe and a straight one, each with its own advantages and disadvantages, summarized in the following table:

Mouthpiece Material: Ebonite, Acrylic, or Cumberland?

Historically, mouthpieces were made of horn or ebonite, a material composed of sulfur and black para rubber. Ebonite is a soft, black material. Ebonite mouthpieces are the best choice for those with sensitive teeth, but they tend to yellow over time and require regular maintenance.

Colorful and rarer than ebonite, Cumberland is an interesting alternative, easily recognizable by its veined patterns in various colors (red, yellow, green, blue, purple...) and dark tones, creating a unique wood-like pattern. This material is also comfortable but requires maintenance.

Today, most pipe makers produce mouthpieces in acrylic. Some might consider it common plastic, but acrylic is not just any plastic: resilient, shiny, and almost maintenance-free, acrylic is a must. The only downside is that acrylic gives a harder, glassier feel when clenching the pipe between your teeth.

Pipe Finishes: Natural, Sandblasted, or Rusticated?

Here, the choice is purely aesthetic. The smooth, natural or colored pipe is the most "precious" because briar wood is a root that accumulates many impurities, making it rare to find a flawless piece.

Sandblasting is fascinating because it reveals the wood's grain by blasting away the softer parts of the wood fiber and leaving the harder ones visible. This provides a larger cooling surface and less weight compared to a smooth pipe of the same shape and size.

Rusticated pipes are crafted with a graver, typically on pipes that do not have a beautiful grain pattern. This process makes the pipe very light and ensures a cooler smoke.

Filters:

A wide variety of filters are available on the market. Among the most commonly used systems today, there are 2 types of filters: 6mm and 9mm filters.

Historically, in Europe, all pipes came with a metal filter (standard system). Today, more and more pipes are equipped with a 9mm filter, as it is the most efficient way to filter moisture and impurities (nicotine, tar...). These filters ensure a smooth and pleasant smoke. Some pipes offer a hybrid system, allowing the use of both a metal filter and a 9mm filter.
